I found this video after news broke of Prince’s passing. In 2004 the surviving members of the Traveling Wilburys paid tribute to George Harrison with a performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the Rock of Roll Hall of Fame Inductions. Prince, one of the evening’s inductees, adds his talents to the end of the song. His solo is both Prince-like and in the style of George’s writing. I have always loved this song (the White Album is my favorite Beatles LP), but Prince makes this performance extra special. While I know he has played many other more complex solos, I keep coming back to this video. There is a great exchange of proud smiles between Prince, Tom Petty, and Dhani Harrion. Prince is enjoying himself, Tom briefly breaks composure with a smile, but Dhani is grins from ear to ear for the last half of the song watching Prince play with ease.
He is so good, sometimes it makes the heart ache. Maybe all the time. His departure from the stage is perfectly Prince.
RIP you lovely, weird, outrageously talented, beautiful man. You are already missed.
